Advice and Support

From the moment you move into your new home, we hope your time as a Keelman tenant will be as smooth and comfortable as possible, but we're still here if and when you need us.

Keelman Homes and Karbon Homes offer a range of advice and support services:

Money Advisors Network

The Money Advisor Network allows you access to free, confidential, and independent debt advice. It brings together some of the country’s best known debt advice providers to help you understand your financial situation, create a personalised budget and draw up a practical action plan to help you back on track.

Aids and Adaptations

If you or a family member are a Karbon Homes tenant and are having difficulty doing everyday tasks such as climbing the stairs or having a bath, then we may be able to help you live more comfortably, safely and independently by adapting your home.

Money Matters Service

Have you heard of Karbons Money Matters Team?

They have one of the largest advice teams in the North East. All their staff are ready to chat, Monday to Friday, and they’re all experienced in listening, not judging, and giving sensible advice to make your life easier. Find out more here.

An adaptation is a special fixture or fitting that is designed to help you with your day-to-day living, improve your mobility in and around your home and improve access to your home.

Minor adaptations include grab rails, banister rails and lever taps, as well as the fitting of key safes. Usually, these types of minor adaptations can be quickly arranged and installed.

Major adaptations are larger changes to your home. These could include wheelchair ramps, wet rooms and stair lifts. We have limited funding for this type of adaptation, although residents can seek independent funding through a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG). When funding is available these works are carried out in the order that we receive them.

Major adaptations – and occasionally minor adaptations – are subject to a full assessment by an occupational therapist who works with your Local Authority.

Before requesting an aid or adaptation you should contact your local authority’s social care team. They will work out which aid or adaptation is right for you. They will also tell you if you need to be assessed by an occupational therapist. Charges do not usually apply for occupational therapist assessments.

Any work undertaken is always subject to Keelman Homes’ written authorisation. A resident must not modify their property or arrange a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) without written permission from Keelman Homes.

Where necessary, all appropriate planning permission and building regulations must be obtained and a copy provided to Keelman Homes.
